What is iridology — and what can it actually tell you?

Iridology is one of the most misunderstood tools in natural medicine — partly because it sounds unusual, and partly because it's often confused with things it isn't.

Here's a clear, honest account of what iridology is, what it can and can't tell you, and why I use it as a central part of every consultation at Sussex Herbal.

What iridology actually is

Iridology is the study of the iris — the coloured part of the eye — as a map of constitutional health. The fibres, pigments, patterns and markings in the iris are thought to reflect inherited tendencies, tissue states, and the relative vitality of different organ systems.

It is not a diagnostic tool in the medical sense — it cannot tell you whether you have a particular disease, and a responsible iridologist will never claim otherwise. What it does offer is a different kind of map: one that helps explain why you tend toward certain patterns of health and imbalance, what your inherited strengths and vulnerabilities are, and where the body's vitality is strong or depleted.

What a reading involves

At Sussex Herbal, iridology readings begin with clear close-up photographs of both irises, taken in good natural light. I study the fibres, markings, and colour variations in each eye and produce a detailed written report covering constitutional type, areas of note, inherited tendencies, and the emotional patterns that often accompany particular iris structures.

The report is paired with practical herbal and lifestyle suggestions — it's not just an observation, it's a starting point for change.

Photo-based readings are available online, which means you can access this kind of constitutional mapping wherever you are in the UK.

Why I combine iridology with herbal medicine

Used alone, iridology gives you a map. Used alongside a full herbal consultation, it gives you a map and a route. The constitutional picture revealed by the iris informs which herbs will work most effectively for a particular person — because the same symptom in two different constitutional types often calls for entirely different plants.

This combination is at the heart of the Turton Method™, and it's what makes the treatment plans at Sussex Herbal unusually precise.

Is it right for you?

A photo-based iridology reading at £99 is often the gentlest entry point into working with Sussex Herbal — a way of getting a clear, personalised picture of your health terrain before committing to a full consultation. Many clients find that the report alone gives them insights that shift how they understand their own body.

I’m Sarah, a medicinal herbalist and founder of Oxford Herbal. I work with people who want to understand the deeper story behind their symptoms — not just to mask them, but to heal from the root.

Using traditional herbal medicine, iridology, and a deep respect for nature’s rhythms, I create personalised plans to support the whole person — body, mind and spirit. My practice is rooted in compassion, connection, and the belief that real wellness comes from working with the body, not against it.
