The Turton Method™

A structured way of understanding why you are unwell — and what your body needs to heal.

Most people who come to Sussex Herbal have already tried a great deal. They have seen their GP, had blood tests come back normal, perhaps tried supplements or a change of diet. They may have been told that what they are experiencing is stress, or age, or something they simply have to manage.

They are not imagining it. And they are not out of options.

What they have not yet had is someone look at the whole picture — not just the symptoms presenting today, but the terrain underneath them. The constitution they were born with. The patterns that have accumulated over years. The nervous system that has been holding more than it should. The body that has been compensating quietly for a long time.

That is what the Turton Method is designed to do.

What the Turton Method is

The Turton Method™ is a clinical framework developed through years of practice, research, and close attention to how people actually get unwell — and how they actually recover.

It is not a protocol. It does not apply the same approach to everyone with the same diagnosis. It is a structured way of reading a person — their constitution, their history, their terrain, their emotional landscape — and building a treatment plan that addresses the pattern beneath the symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves.

At its centre is a single clinical conviction: that health is the expression of constitution responding over time to terrain, and that healing occurs when direction is restored and the body is supported to reorganise itself.

In practice, this means that two people with the same diagnosis — IBS, burnout, perimenopause, eczema — will receive entirely different treatment. Because they are entirely different people, with different constitutions, different histories, and different patterns of depletion and resilience.

How it works

The method moves through four stages of clinical assessment, each deepening the picture.

The first is observation — what I can see, hear, and sense in the way you present: your colouring, your energy, the way you speak about your symptoms, the patterns you may not have noticed yourself.

The second is pattern recognition — identifying the underlying constitutional and systemic patterns that connect your symptoms into a coherent picture rather than a list of unrelated complaints.

The third is iridological confirmation — reading the iris to map your constitutional type, inherited tendencies, vitality, nervous system state, and the organs and systems that are under the greatest load. The iris does not diagnose disease. It reveals terrain — and terrain is what we are treating.

The fourth is terrain synthesis — bringing observation, pattern, and iridology together into a clear understanding of what is driving your health picture, and what needs to happen, in what order, to begin shifting it.

The Order of Coherence

Once the terrain is understood, treatment follows a specific sequence. Not all interventions are equally useful at all times. A body under significant stress needs safety and regulation before it can benefit from activation. A digestive system that is inflamed needs soothing before it can be stimulated. A nervous system that is depleted needs nourishment before it can be rebuilt.

The Turton Method works through five stages of support, always in order:

Safety first — reducing anything that is actively burdening the system.
Then regulation — supporting the nervous system's capacity to find its own balance.
Then elimination — helping the body clear what has accumulated.
Then nourishment — providing what the terrain genuinely needs to rebuild.
Then, and only then, activation — supporting the body to move toward its fullest possible function.

This sequencing is one of the things that makes the Turton Method different from many approaches to herbal medicine. It is not about giving the right herbs for a condition. It is about giving the right support, at the right depth, at the right time.

What this means for you

When you come to Sussex Herbal, you are not bringing me a diagnosis to treat. You are bringing me your story, your constitution, and your body's current state — and together we build a clear picture of what is happening and why.

From that picture comes a herbal prescription that is individual to you: simple, effective, and sequenced to support your body's own direction of healing rather than override it.

Most clients work with me over six months. Some longer. This is not because herbal medicine is slow — it is because terrain does not shift overnight, and the kind of change that lasts is the kind that the body has been genuinely supported to make.

The ember

There is something I have come to believe firmly through years of clinical work: that no matter how depleted someone is, no matter how long they have been unwell or how much they have lost trust in their own body, the animating core of their health — their vitality, their direction, their capacity for coherence — has not gone out.

It may be very quiet. It may need a great deal of support to become audible again. But it is there.

The work of the Turton Method is to find it, and to give it what it needs to strengthen.
